Transforming a Home to Reflect a Lifestyle
The clients, who were purchasing a home and relocating to New Hampshire, wanted Cheryl and her team to design a home that was uniquely theirs. Gilberte Interiors is a family business that was formed nearly 60 years ago in 196 7. The firm has in-house designers who collaborate with teams of architects, contractors, and specialists to take projects from conception to completion. This project, which involved reimagining and repurposing spaces as well as creating a new interior design, was an example of that teamwork.
An Historical Modernization
Deep in the heart of the Old Cambridge Historic District in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a stately, center-entrance Mansard was built in 1857 contiguous to the original Longfellow estate. We were honored that a family we’ve worked with on numerous projects over the years asked us to transform this building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, into a welcoming home. We knew with some creativity and close collaboration we could create inviting spaces that would support their lifestyle and reflect their taste in design.
A Second House Becomes a Home
It’s always a joy to be invited to work on a family’s dream. For this project, the family contacted us when they were still reviewing architectural plans, and we immediately began building a conceptual direction based on the family’s lifestyle and the unique siting of this proposed home on a wonderful parcel of land with a commanding view overlooking Quechee, Vermont. The challenge and fun in this design was create warm inviting spaces allowed people to relax and enjoy time together without trying to compete with the view.
When form meets function
Sometimes we have the privilege of revisiting a project as a family grows and changes and the unfinished spaces of a home are ready to be planned and developed. This was the nature of a recent opportunity at a house on Occom Pond, where a family of Dartmouth alumni and current Dartmouth students discovered they needed more space for family and friends to feel welcome.
Part of this project took place in the lower levels of the home, where we created a cozy bunk room out of an unfinished basement where previously only the walls had been plastered and the concrete floors sealed.
